The Marine
Corps
Perhaps Commandant General Charles C. Krulak said
it best, We make Marines, and we win battles. This has
been our purpose since our birth on 10 November 1775, at the legendary
Tun Tavern, a favorite meeting place in the 18th century Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania.
What makes Marines different? It is not so much what we do, but
how we do it.
We are the only service specifically tasked by Congress to be able
to operate combined arms in three dimensions: air, land, and sea.
We are a multi-dimensional force with common mindset, best exemplified
by the credo: "Every Marine a rifleman." Every Marine,
regardless of specialty, is fundamentally the same. Each is formed
from a common experience, shares a common set of values, and is
trained as a cohesive air-ground team from the moment they join
the Corps.
We are soldiers of the land, sea, and air. Our historic mission
has been to be ever-ready. Because of our crisis response role,
we have been called "Teufel Hunden" -- Devil Dogs -- by
German defenders at Belleau Wood in World War I.
